Family Meal Frameworks to Feed Adults, Children, and Babies
Maintaining a nutritious diet during pregnancy is vital for the health and development of both the pregnant person and the growing baby. However, family meals can get complicated with varying food preferences, nutritional needs, and picky eaters. Rewire Health partnered with Boston Medical Center's GROW Clinic to make mealtimes easier by providing pregnant people with accessible and culturally affirming culinary medicine resources to support families from pregnancy to feeding babies.
GROW Clinic
GROW Clinic is a national leader in treating children with Failure to Thrive, a condition where patients have significant difficulty growing due to malnutrition associated with poverty, illness, and family stress. The clinic serves a racially and ethnically diverse patient population, with more than 30% reporting English as a second language. In addition, 75% of patients have Medicaid, Medicare, or are uninsured, and 50% classify as low-income with an annual income below the federal poverty level.
To address the needs of this unique patient population, Rewire Health worked with GROW Clinic's registered dietitians and speech pathologists to create nutritious and delicious content that is adaptable to meet both social determents of health and the developmental needs of babies and children.
Addressing Personalization
The ability to address personalization while considering medical and nutritional needs is what Rewire Health does best. The novel technology populates recipe frameworks that adapt based on the foods a person prefers or has on hand and the available time, skills, and kitchen equipment.
Enjoying food is a critical component of living a sustainable healthy lifestyle. Every recipe framework encourages food choices that represent the population served. Framework engineers with diverse cultural backgrounds curated culturally affirming content for this project. In addition, patients and staff from the clinic provided recipe ideas.
How it Works
Rewire Health's technology enhances group culinary medicine classes offered by Boston Medical Center's Teaching Kitchen and one-on-one counseling through an equitable, scalable, and data-driven approach.
This project's next phase will systematically improve resources based on user behavior and feedback and integrate the technology with local food suppliers to establish community partnerships and support economic mobility.
